Forum: Coal Seam Gas and the Carbon Tax Forum

When:  Thursday 20th October 1-2pm

Melbourne Uni’s Climate Action Working Group, a bunch of students who want to engage people in meaningful debate on issues that relate to climate change, are hosting a forum on coal seam gas in the context of a carbon tax.

As the carbon tax comes into effect the Australian energy sector will swing away from coal, towards…gas. Already, numerous mining companies are beginning exploration across Gippsland and the Otways. The CSG industry has recently come under intense scrutiny following the American movie ‘Gasland’, which highlights the tendency for their operations to poison groundwater. In Australia, CSG it is becoming well known because of the extraordinary efforts of QLD landholders to keep it off their land in the ‘Lock the Gate’ campaign.
At this forum, Gavin Mudd, civil engineer from Monash University will outline the environmental impact that CSG extraction can have.
Cam Walker of Friends of the Earth Australia will also speak about the strong community opposition to the expanding industry and the relation between the carbon tax and the expanding gas industry.

The forum will be on Thursday 20th October, 1-2pm in Old Arts Theatre D.
