The Queensland premier has defended her first major election promise, amid claims she's putting education ahead of problem-plagued mining communities.
Anna Bligh has promised to quarantine 50 per cent of state royalties from the liquefied natural gas industry for a new education fund if Labor is re-elected next year.
The Mines for Minds policy will set aside an estimated $1.8 billion over the next 10 years, and more beyond that, for education and skills training initiatives.
It's been welcomed by educators, but others fear Labor's promise could come at the expense of mining communities facing a raft of social problems from the resource boom.
