McDonald Urges Halt to Exploration for Gas

Gasbagging: State Opposition Leader John Robertson (right) and opposition health spokesman Andrew McDonald, who is Macquarie Fields MP, are worried about the potential impact of coal seam gas mining on aquifers and waterways in Macarthur, such as this section of Menangle River. "That water goes to Gosford," Dr McDonald said. "Anything here will affect the whole of Sydney."Picture: Luke Fuda

JOHN Robertson visited the Nepean River at Menangle Park on Thursday with Macquarie Fields MP Andrew McDonald and said all coal seam gas exploration should be suspended until its effects on waterways and aquifers were fully understood.

His comments drew criticism from Liberal MPs, who slammed the previous Labor government for issuing the licences in the first place.

Parts of Campbelltown and the Scenic Hills have been earmarked for the Camden Gas Project's northern expansion. If the plans, which are now before the state government, are approved, 72 gas wells will be drilled.

"In the case of the Camden Gas Project, which straddles the Nepean River, the government should reject any proposals from AGL to expand its operations outright," Mr Robertson said.

"Evidence from overseas and interstate indicates that coal seam gas mining operations could have a devastating and permanent impact on groundwater resources.
