Origin to Assess Basin Gas Potential





An energy company has applied for State Government permission to build up to 600 gas wells in the Surat Basin in southern Queensland.

Origin Energy says its Ironbark project, near Tara on the Western Downs, could see up to 600 wells built over 40 years to supply the Darling Downs Power Station at Dalby.

The company has formally started the environmental impact process needed to get State Government approval.

Origin Energy spokesman Christopher Zipf says prospecting has begun.
"Very much what we call in the industry an appraisal stage, where we're drilling pilot wells and determining the extent of the resource," he said.
