Talks between BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance
and the Construction Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) hit an impasse
yesterday as the two sides seek to reach an agreement covering 3,500 workers at
three sites in Queensland's Bowen Basin, according to a report by the
Australian Financial Review.
The breakdown in talks pose the latest hurdle
in labour negotiations that threaten coal exports on Australia's east
coast.
BHP's Bowen Basin sites experienced industrial
action in late 2011, which produced a commitment from the CFMEU and BHP to talk.
Those negotiations have produced some agreement, but the employer has refused to
commit to union demands over the use of labour hire and other issues surrounding
the union's role in the workplace.
