Tourism group backs CSG blockaders

QUEENSLAND'S peak tourism industry group has backed protesters blockading a coal seam gas (CSG) drilling site near Beaudesert.

The Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC) says while mining plays a valuable part in the state's economy, extensive community consultation is imperative before exploration work goes ahead.

Local farmers and anti-CSG protesters set up a blockade of a drilling site at Kerry near Beaudesert, on January 12.

QTIC Chairman Stephen Gregg says more than 80 per cent of Scenic Rim Shire, an hour inland from the Gold Coast, is covered by exploration permits.
"The Scenic Rim has long been an iconic and highly valuable tourism destination for Queensland," Mr Gregg said.

"Exploration drilling is already under way in the Scenic Rim and resource company plans are progressing rapidly."
