Newman urged to keep reef heritage area

CONSERVATIONISTS in beach gear have turned up at parliament armed with a cake, hoping to sweet-talk Queensland Premier Campbell Newman on World Heritage Day.

They gathered outside Parliament House to draw attention to a proposal to move the boundaries of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area to exclude resource hubs like Gladstone Harbour.

But Mr Newman, who supports the proposal, was away in Cairns.

Friends of the Earth spokesman Bradley Smith said Gladstone Port Corporation would be less accountable in protecting the marine environment if the port was excised from the World Heritage Area under the proposed change.

"At the moment there's some oversight to protect the shared wealth we have in that World Heritage Area," he said.
