Academic airs CSG aquifer fears

A legal expert says the State Government must strengthen water use guidelines before coal seam gas (CSG) extraction begins in Victoria.

A parliamentary inquiry has called on the Government to strengthen consultation processes around CSG projects.

However, a Deakin Law School associate professor, Samantha Hepburn, says the report failed to recognise that damage to aquifers is one of the most significant issues posed by extracting the gas.

She says rules about water use by CSG projects should consider drought conditions.

"It doesn't have as much of an effect when we've got a bit of water around but we are an arid landscape and so when that does happen, when it does come around, it could be catastrophic," she said.
