Salt plan bad news for Warrego

THE battered Warrego Hwy could face a barrage of new heavy traffic if plans go ahead for a major coal seam gas project in western Queensland.

Arrow Energy says its Surat Gas Project will produce up to 3.5 million tonnes of salt over the next 30 years.

The company claims to be looking for "beneficial" modes of disposal, but its back-up plan involves transporting the salt through Toowoomba for storage at a site in Swanbank near Ipswich.

The plan would mean an extra 3000 B-double trucks passing through Toowoomba's already worn-out road system each year.

From Toowoomba, they would travel to Helidon on the Warrego Hwy - a 16km stretch of road yesterday rated as "high risk" by the Australian Road Assessment Program.
