WA coast protected by marine sanctuaries

FISHING, oil and gas exploration in WA will be limited under Federal Government plans to create a world-first network of marine reserves around Australia.

In WA, fishing will be banned in more than 20 areas, which will also be off limits for oil-and-gas drilling.

The Gillard Government has also moved to ban oil-and-gas exploration off the Margaret River coastline, ensuring the region's high value eco-tourism status.

But commercial and recreational fishers predict coastal communities will be devastated by the loss of 36,000 jobs and more than $4 billion in lost revenue.

WA Fishing Industry Council spokesman Guy Leyland said he was shocked by the size of these reserves.
