Gas commission defines powers

THE GasFields Commission Queensland has taken a major step forward after Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney's endorsement of its proposed powers and functions this week.

The proposed suite of powers and functions were recommended by GasFields Commission Queensland chairman John Cotter and commissioners Don Stiller, Ian Hayllor, Ray Brown, Rick Wilkinson, Steven Raine and Shane Charles after lengthy discussions held at their first meeting.
In drafting the proposed powers and functions, GasFields Commissioners together considered the 55 community submissions received from individual residents, landholders, rural lobby groups, irrigator groups, coal seam gas (CSG) proponents and academics.
The proposed powers and functions fall into seven broad categories:

  • Ability to assess the potential for co-existence
  • Powers to get information
  • Powers to publish and communicate information
  • Ability to seek external advice
  • Powers to review regulatory frameworks and legislation
  • Dispute resolution
  • Leading practice/management.
